L. HallinResearch interests: particle astrophysics, neutrinos and their properties, neutrinoless double beta decay, dark matter.
Currently(2007) my main project is the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory(SNO) which has been running since 1999 and was recently turned off in November, 2006. This experiment has already demonstrated that neutrinos have mass and oscillate. This is the only conclusive experimental evidence that the standard model of particle physics is incomplete, and has generated considerable interest in the particle physics community. We have also demonstrated that the standard solar model is substantially correct. The analysis of the SNO data will continue at least through 2008. In 2002 we received funding to build the SNOLab underground facility in Sudbury, which will site future experiments involving double beta decay, dark matter detectors, neutrino detectors and other experiments that look for very rare events. The future experiments that I am starting to work on are DEAP, a liquid argon dark matter detector, SNO+, an experiment to measure double beta decay, solar neutrinos, neutrino oscillation parameters, and geoneutrinos, using the SNO detector filled with liquid scintillator.
Graduate students play a crucial role in these particle astrophysics experiments. Queen's students have made major breakthroughs and large contributions to SNO in the research for their theses. We are always interested in recruiting good graduate students, and would encourage interested students to contact me and apply to our program. For more details on the various physics experiments and the Queen's Particle Astrophysics group, please vist our web site.
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) is a large international project to study neutrinos from the sun and from supernova. Neutrinos, which are among the most abundant particles in the universe, are emitted in the nuclear fusion reactions that fuel the sun. When neutrinos travel through material, they interact only very rarely; even the sun is essentially completely transparent to neutrinos. This means that neutrinos can be used to directly measure the rate of various nuclear reactions occurring in the core of the sun; all other radiations from the sun are emitted from its surface. This also means that neutrinos are incredibly difficult to measure, and even the largest practical detectors can only sample a tiny fraction of the neutrinos that pass through. SNO is designed to measure the number of neutrinos and the energy of neutrinos emitted form the sun and from supernova, as well as to study properties of neutrinos. SNO has been able to independently measure the energy and flux of electron neutrinos and the flux of all types of solar neutrinos.
The detector is based on 1000 tonnes of heavy water, which is the best
material for detecting these neutrinos. To filter out cosmic rays, the
detector is located 2000 meters underground in the Creighton mine near
Queen's is participating in several ways. The administration of the project is through the SNO Institute, located at Queen's. We are responsible for the photomultiplier tubes, for the calibration of the detector, and for parts of the high purity water system, electronics, data acquisition software, and for analysis of the data. The detector started operation during 1999, and the focus of the group is on understanding the detector's performance, calibrations, and data analysis.
In terms of analysis, my interests (and possible thesis topics for students) include:
In addition, I am responsible for the calibration of the SNO detector. This involves the deployment of various sources, and the analysis of subsequent calibration data. We are finding that it is necessary to continue to develop new sources that will allow us to measure the details of the detector. Current research projects include:
